Kurdish journalism is mourning the death of Halkawt Aziz, Rudaw Media Network’s Baghdad bureau chief, who died after a traffic crash on the Baghdad-Basra highway.
Aziz was 36. He is survived by his wife, two sons, parents, and six siblings.
His death has brought grief across the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the wider media community. Diplomats, political leaders, journalists, and media organizations have paid tribute to his life, work, and service to Kurdish journalism.
A preliminary traffic police investigation has now found that the driver of an 18-wheeler truck was fully responsible for the crash.
Halkawt Aziz and the Crash Investigation
According to Diwaniyah traffic police, the crash happened Monday afternoon on a highway passing through the southern province while Halkawt Aziz was traveling from Baghdad toward Basra.
Colonel Muhannad Fawzi, director of media at Diwaniyah province’s traffic directorate, said the truck driver was “100 percent negligent” and lost control because of fatigue, exhaustion, and drowsiness.
Police identified the driver as Mohammed Abd Khader Aidan. Authorities said he remains in custody.
Amer al-Rokabi, spokesperson for Diwaniyah Police Command, said Aziz’s family had not yet filed a formal complaint. He said an investigating judge had requested a complaint from the family. Without it, the driver could be released on bail while awaiting trial.
Rokabi said the driver could face prison time and financial penalties if a complaint is filed and the case moves forward under Iraqi law.
Colonel Haider Shakir, director of media for Iraq’s General Traffic Directorate, said the truck first moved onto the roadside shoulder before losing its lane and blocking the road after hitting the central barrier.
The crash then involved Aziz’s vehicle.
A Sudden Death While Traveling to Basra
Aziz died after suffering critical injuries in the crash. He was taken to Diwaniyah Hospital, where he later passed away.
Khatab Ajami, Aziz’s cameraman, was in the same vehicle at the time of the accident. He said the crash happened in a split second and described trying to call Aziz’s name before rushing him to the hospital.
His words have added deep sadness to an already painful loss.
The incident has also raised concern about road safety in Iraq. Long-distance travel remains part of daily work for many journalists. Reporters often move between cities to cover political meetings, public events, protests, and breaking news.
Aziz’s death is a painful reminder of the risks that come with field journalism.
