ErbilGalyawa Medical Centre in Erbil is now providing free healthcare services and medicine to more than 50,000 registered patients with diabetes and endocrine disorders.

The Galyawa Teaching Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology has become one of the Kurdistan Region’s key public health institutions. The centre focuses on treatment, medical training, and scientific research.

Patients registered through chronic disease booklets receive care and medication at no cost. This includes insulin, oral diabetes medicine, and hormone-related treatments.

The centre was established in 2024. Since then, it has expanded its role in diabetes and endocrine care in Erbil.

According to the Department of Media and Information, more than 43,000 adult patients are registered at the centre. It also serves 1,600 children with Type 1 diabetes and nearly 8,000 internally displaced persons.

The centre’s services are especially important for families who need long-term care. Diabetes and endocrine disorders often require regular checkups, lab work, medicine, and monitoring. Free access to these services helps reduce pressure on patients and their families.

Galyawa Medical Centre Expands Access to Diabetes Care

Galyawa Medical Centre also supports local health clinics by distributing medical supplies across communities. This allows patients to receive some services closer to home instead of relying only on hospital visits.

The centre includes several specialised departments. These include adult diabetes and endocrinology clinics, paediatric diabetes and endocrinology clinics, an ophthalmology clinic, nutrition and dietetics services, radiology and ultrasound units, an advanced laboratory, and a pharmacy.

The ophthalmology clinic plays an important role because diabetes can affect eye health. Nutrition support is also central to diabetes care, as patients often need guidance on diet and lifestyle management.

By combining treatment, medicine, education, and research, the centre is building a wider model of care for chronic disease management in the Kurdistan Region.

The expansion of Galyawa Medical Centre also reflects the growing need for specialised public healthcare services in Erbil. As more patients register, the centre is expected to remain a major hub for diabetes and endocrine treatment.

For many patients, the centre offers more than medical support. It provides steady access to care, medicine, and follow-up services for conditions that require long-term attention.
