Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and UK Ambassador to Iraq Irfan Siddiq met in Erbil on Monday to discuss Iraq’s political situation, regional developments, and ties between the Kurdistan Region and the United Kingdom.
The meeting focused on the need to strengthen relations between the Kurdistan Region and the UK. Both sides also discussed the importance of supporting Iraq’s federal government as it works to preserve peace and stability.
Ambassador Siddiq praised Barzani’s visit to Baghdad last month. He described it as a successful step toward resolving long-running disputes between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government under the Iraqi Constitution.

The meeting comes at a time when Erbil and Baghdad continue to face key issues tied to budget, salaries, oil, security, and constitutional powers. For the Kurdistan Region, steady dialogue with Baghdad remains central to protecting its rights while keeping Iraq stable.
Barzani also stressed the need to reactivate the Kurdistan Parliament. He said the parliament must resume its work as a vital legislative institution. He added that its return is needed to end the political stalemate in the Kurdistan Region.
The comments point to two linked priorities for the Kurdistan Region. The first is improving relations with Baghdad through constitutional talks. The second is restoring normal political life inside the Kurdistan Region through parliament.
The UK has long kept close political, security, and diplomatic ties with the Kurdistan Region. Monday’s meeting showed that London continues to view the region as an important partner in Iraq’s stability.
For Erbil, the message was clear. Stronger international ties matter, but internal unity and active institutions are also needed. A working parliament would help pass laws, review government policy, and give the public a stronger voice during a sensitive political period.
The meeting also showed that foreign partners are watching the Erbil-Baghdad file closely. Any progress between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government can help reduce tensions and support wider stability in Iraq.
As talks continue, the focus will remain on whether political leaders can turn recent meetings into practical steps. For the Kurdistan Region, that means progress with Baghdad and the return of parliament as an active institution.
