As part of the Ninth Cabinet’s continued focus on infrastructure and reconstruction, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is advancing work on the strategic Korre–Shaqlawa–Qandil road project — one of the most significant transportation developments currently underway in the Kurdistan Region.

The 10-kilometre route is being constructed as a dual carriageway to enhance traffic capacity and long-term safety. Three modern interchanges are also being developed along the corridor to improve mobility and reduce congestion, particularly during peak travel seasons.

A central component of the project is the construction of the Mirawa and Mawaran tunnels. Both tunnels are being built using modern engineering techniques that align with international quality and safety standards. According to officials, one carriageway has already been completed, while work continues intensively on the second.

With an allocated budget of IQD 90 billion, the project is progressing at an accelerated pace. Authorities indicate that completion may occur ahead of schedule — a move expected to significantly benefit residents, businesses, and tourists traveling between Hawler and surrounding mountainous districts.

Importantly, the project is being executed primarily through local expertise and labour, highlighting the KRG’s stated commitment to strengthening domestic capacity and empowering local companies in strategic infrastructure initiatives.

The Korre–Shaqlawa–Qandil project is widely viewed as a key step toward improving regional connectivity and supporting economic development in northern Kurdistan.
