A deadly Erbil displacement camp strike hit a camp near Erbil on Friday, killing members of an Iranian Kurdish opposition group and civilians, including a child, according to initial reports from the scene.
The attack targeted Jezhnikan camp, which houses displaced families from Eastern Kurdistan. The strike involved both drones and missiles, hitting what has been described as a civilian area.
Early information indicates that at least three people were killed. Among the victims was a child, Shahin Azarbarzin. His father, Nader Azarbarzin, was seriously injured and transferred for medical treatment. Two young women, Neda Miri and Samira Allayari, were also reported killed.
Several others, including women and children, were wounded in the strike.
Conflicting casualty details emerge
There are conflicting accounts regarding the exact number of casualties. Camp administration officials reported that one person was killed and two others were injured when a drone struck a residence inside the camp.
Other field reports suggest higher casualties, indicating that the full impact of the Erbil displacement camp strike may still be under assessment.
The camp had reportedly been partially evacuated in recent months due to earlier attacks in the area, raising concerns about continued vulnerability despite precautionary measures.
Additional drone strikes reported later
Later the same day, two drones targeted another camp in Erbil province housing family members of Kurdish Iranian opposition fighters. These strikes caused material damage but no confirmed casualties.
The incidents reflect a pattern of continued aerial attacks targeting sites linked to Iranian Kurdish opposition groups inside the Kurdistan Region.
Ongoing security concerns
The Erbil displacement camp strike highlights ongoing risks facing civilian areas, particularly displacement camps. These locations continue to face repeated threats despite relocation efforts and previous security measures.
The Kurdistan Region has experienced a series of drone and missile attacks in recent months, raising broader concerns about civilian safety and regional stability.
Authorities have not yet released a final confirmed casualty figure as investigations continue.
