Khor Mor Gas Field Attacked in Late-Night Strike; No Casualties, Major Power Disruptions

The Iraqi Security Media Cell has confirmed that the Khor Mor gas field in Sulaimani province was attacked late Wednesday night, describing the incident as a “dangerous terrorist act” aimed at destabilizing Iraq’s economic infrastructure.

The strike occurred around 11:30 p.m., igniting a fire in one of the site’s main tanks. Emergency teams managed to contain the blaze, and no human casualties were reported. Officials say the attackers sought to disrupt efforts to strengthen national economic stability.

According to the Security Media Cell, the assault directly threatens a vital energy source that powers much of the Kurdistan Region. The Khor Mor gas field supplies natural gas crucial for electricity generation across Hawler and Sulaimani, making it one of the most strategically important facilities in the region.

Electricity Supply Severely Impacted

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) announced that the attack has forced a major reduction in power availability. The region is now able to supply only five hours of electricity per day, a sharp drop from normal levels. Authorities say it is still unclear when electricity production will return to regular capacity.

Energy technicians and security teams remain on-site, assessing the full extent of the damage and working to restore operations. The attack is expected to have a significant short-term impact on both households and businesses already struggling with inconsistent power access.

Condemnation and Response

The Iraqi Security Media Cell strongly condemned the assault, calling it a “treacherous and cowardly act” targeting the country’s vital economic interests. Officials vowed that those responsible will face firm legal action, emphasizing that the perpetrators will be fully held accountable.

As investigations continue, authorities highlight the broader implications of the incident — from economic strain to regional instability — underscoring the urgent need for enhanced protection of strategic infrastructure.
