Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani met with the provincial security committee in Sulaymaniyah on Wednesday to discuss new measures aimed at protecting citizens and their property during a period of heightened regional tension.

The meeting took place on 4 March 2026 as officials reviewed the impact of ongoing conflict in the wider region on the Kurdistan Region. Talabani said the Kurdistan Region remains neutral and is not a party to the conflict, but recent developments have still affected the area.

He said the current situation requires authorities to take extra precautions to maintain public safety. As part of the response, officials agreed to establish a dedicated operations room that will coordinate security forces and relevant government bodies across the province.

The coordination centre will focus on improving communication between security agencies and ensuring quick responses to any incidents that may threaten stability or public safety.

During the meeting, officials also called on residents to avoid large gatherings and crowded places until the situation in the region becomes more stable. Authorities said the precaution is intended to reduce risks during a period of uncertainty.

Electricity supply was another topic discussed during the session. Officials decided to address ongoing issues involving private generators to help guarantee daily electricity for residents across the province.

The meeting also focused on the role of media during emergency situations. Officials urged media organisations to prioritise national security and public safety when reporting on developments. Channel managers were asked to provide clear guidance to journalists to ensure responsible coverage that does not compromise security operations.

The measures come as the Kurdistan Region continues to monitor regional tensions while seeking to maintain stability and protect civilians.
