The Goptapa–Chamchamal Water Project has reached 40 percent completion as work continues on one of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s major water supply projects.
The IQD 139.51 billion project aims to reduce water shortages across Aghjalar, Chamchamal, Takya, and nearby villages. Once operational, it will provide up to 3,400 cubic metres of water each hour.
Work Advances on the Goptapa–Chamchamal Water Project
Construction teams are laying around 10 kilometres of main water transmission pipelines. Workers are also installing electrical lines and pylons needed to operate the system.
The project includes new pumping stations and water treatment and filtration facilities. These units will prepare and distribute clean water to communities covered by the network.
Concrete work on two large water storage reservoirs is also nearing completion. One reservoir will hold 10,000 cubic metres of water, while the second will have a capacity of 20,000 cubic metres.
Project Targets June 2027 Completion
The Goptapa–Chamchamal Water Project forms part of the KRG’s wider programme to improve water security and expand access to reliable drinking water.
The project is scheduled for completion on June 13, 2027. Its planned capacity is expected to support residents in Chamchamal and other communities that have faced water supply pressures.
The development combines water treatment, storage, pumping, electricity, and transmission infrastructure within one system. This will allow water to move from the project’s source to homes and communities across the covered areas.
