The Kurdistan Region Water Projects listed by the Kurdistan Regional Government could supply more than 1.2 million cubic metres of drinking water each day once fully operational.

The projects cover Erbil, Duhok, Slemani, Barzan, Akre, Bardarash, Darbandikhan, Ranya and other areas. Some are complete, while others remain under construction.

Based on figures released by the KRG, the listed drinking water projects have a combined budget of about IQD 2.37 trillion. The government is also investing $779 million in two wastewater treatment projects.

Kurdistan Region Water Projects Expand Daily Supply

The Erbil Emergency Water Project is the largest completed project on the list.

The government spent IQD 720 billion on the development. It can supply 480,000 cubic metres of drinking water each day.

The project was designed to reduce water shortages in Erbil and provide the city with a more stable water source.

Three other completed projects add another 153,600 cubic metres of daily capacity.

The Qushtapa Water Project cost IQD 222 billion and can produce 72,000 cubic metres per day.

The Faida Water Project in Duhok also has a daily capacity of 72,000 cubic metres. It was completed with an investment of IQD 50 billion.

The Pirmam and surrounding areas project cost IQD 34.7 billion. It can supply 9,600 cubic metres each day.

Together, the four completed projects can provide about 633,600 cubic metres of drinking water per day.

Five Major Projects Near Completion

Several other water projects have entered the later stages of construction.

A project serving 53 villages in the Barzan area is 98% complete. It has a budget of IQD 138.5 billion and is expected to supply 28,600 cubic metres per day.

Work on a 411-kilometre water network in Erbil is 95% complete. The network has a budget of IQD 25 billion.

The Ranya-Chwarqurna-Hajiawa Water Project has reached 70% completion. It will provide up to 72,000 cubic metres of water each day. Its budget stands at IQD 36.7 billion.

The Akre Water Project is 67% complete. The IQD 41.1 billion development will also have a daily capacity of 72,000 cubic metres.

In Darbandikhan, a water project with a budget of IQD 25 billion is 75% complete. It is expected to supply 24,000 cubic metres per day.

The four supply projects in this group will add about 196,600 cubic metres of daily capacity. The Erbil network will support the distribution of water across the city.

New Projects Target Growing Water Needs

Three large projects remain in the early or middle stages of construction.

The Goptapa-Chamchamal Water Project is 37% complete. It has a budget of IQD 101 billion and will supply 60,000 cubic metres per day.

The Bardarash Water Project has reached 10% completion. Its budget is IQD 428 billion. Once finished, it will provide 72,000 cubic metres of drinking water each day.

The Dukan-Slemani 3 Water Project is one of the largest new developments. The IQD 551 billion project is expected to deliver 240,000 cubic metres per day.

Together, these three projects will add 372,000 cubic metres of daily water capacity.

Wastewater Treatment Investment Continues

The KRG is also developing wastewater treatment facilities to reduce pollution and improve water management.

The first phase has a budget of $200 million. It will treat 52,500 cubic metres of wastewater each day.

The second phase has a budget of $579 million and is 4% complete. It is designed to treat 210,000 cubic metres per day.

The two phases will have a combined treatment capacity of 262,500 cubic metres each day.

The projects could help limit untreated wastewater, protect local water sources and improve environmental conditions near growing urban areas.

Water Security Remains a Regional Priority

The Kurdistan Region has faced pressure from population growth, urban development, ageing networks and changes in water availability.

The listed projects aim to increase supply while improving the systems used to transport and treat water.

Their full impact will depend on construction progress, maintenance and reliable operation after completion.

If delivered as planned, the Kurdistan Region Water Projects will expand access to drinking water and strengthen the region’s ability to manage future shortages.
