The United States has strongly condemned the latest attack on the Khor Mor gas field, calling it a “terrorist attack” and signaling readiness to support efforts to protect the Kurdistan Region’s critical energy infrastructure.
In a statement released Thursday evening, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad said it stands with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and Iraqi partners in demanding swift action to hold the perpetrators accountable.
U.S. Calls for Accountability and Protection of Kurdistan’s Energy Sector
“We join the Kurdistan Regional Government and other Iraqi partners in calling for immediate action by the Government of Iraq to hold accountable the perpetrators of this terrorist attack,” the statement said.
The embassy emphasized that the strike is “the latest in a spate of attempts by malign actors” to destabilize Iraq and target American-linked investments in the Kurdistan Region.
Washington stated it is prepared to support efforts aimed at shielding vital energy installations, stressing that Iraq must assert full sovereignty and ensure that all weapons — including drones, rockets, and missiles — are brought under state control.
The U.S. position reflects growing concern over repeated attacks on Khor Mor, a strategic gas field that powers much of the Kurdistan Region and remains central to the Region’s economic stability.
Conflicting Reports on the Type of Weapon Used
Although early reports indicated that the assault involved drones, senior Kurdish statesman Hoshyar Zebari said on X that the attack was actually carried out using Grad rockets fired from the Tuz Khurmatu axis, near Kirkuk.
His statement adds a new layer to the investigation into how the strike was executed and who may be responsible.
Wednesday’s strike on Khor Mor—located in Sulaimani province —ignited international alarm, with multiple governments and diplomatic missions calling for stronger measures to prevent further attacks on energy infrastructure. The facility has been targeted numerous times over the past few years, causing repeated power shortages across the Kurdistan Region.
The U.S. Embassy’s direct offer of support marks one of the strongest reactions yet, underlining the global significance of Khor Mor and the urgent need for coordinated response mechanisms.
As the Kurdistan Region grapples with sharp electricity reductions and the KRG works alongside Dana Gas to assess the damage, the pressure on Baghdad to act decisively continues to intensify.
The attack not only threatens the Kurdistan Region’s energy lifeline but also raises broader questions about Iraq’s ability to protect strategic assets and enforce state authority in the face of armed groups operating outside government control.
