Kurdish mixed martial artist Namo Fazil suffered a loss to Brazilian fighter Kaik Brito in the main event of Dana White’s Contender Series Season 10, Week 2.
The result was not what Fazil or his supporters wanted, but the August 18 contest at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas still represented the most significant opportunity of his professional career.
Fazil competed directly in front of UFC CEO Dana White and the promotion’s matchmakers while headlining an international event. His position at the top of the card demonstrated how far the Kurdish welterweight had progressed—and how seriously he was being considered as a potential UFC talent.
Namo Fazil Earned His Opportunity
Namo Fazil entered the fight with an impressive 10-1 professional record and a seven-fight winning streak. Eight of his victories had come before the final bell, divided between four knockouts and four submissions.
His momentum had been built across several respected promotions, including ONE Championship, UAE Warriors and MVP MMA.
In May, Fazil submitted Jake Babian with an anaconda choke during the second round of MVP MMA’s debut event. That victory elevated his profile and helped him secure a place on the UFC’s most important prospect-development platform.
The UFC selected Namo Fazil and Kaik Brito to headline Week 2, placing their welterweight contest above every other fight on the card.
Although Fazil ultimately lost, simply reaching the Contender Series main event was an achievement earned through years of victories, preparation and persistence.
A Difficult Test Against Kaik Brito
Fazil was matched against one of the most experienced fighters competing on the show.
Kaik Brito entered with a 19-6 professional record, 16 knockout victories and multiple reigns as Oktagon MMA welterweight champion. He had already competed internationally and previously appeared on the Contender Series in 2023.
The loss will be disappointing for Fazil, particularly because a victory could have moved him closer to an immediate UFC contract. However, facing an opponent of Brito’s calibre also gave Fazil valuable experience against a proven championship-level fighter.
It was a difficult assignment on the largest stage of his career, but Fazil accepted the challenge and tested himself when the stakes were at their highest.
Representing Kurdistan on an International Stage
Fazil has consistently connected his fighting career with his Kurdish identity.
Known as the “Grandson of Saladin,” his nickname pays tribute to the celebrated Kurdish historical leader Salahaddin Ayyubi. Fazil has used his entrances, interviews and online presence to represent Kurdistan before international audiences.
In July, Visit Kurdistan named Namo Fazil an official brand ambassador, recognizing his efforts to promote Kurdish identity through professional sport.
His appearance on the Contender Series gave that representation an even larger platform. Kurdish supporters around the world watched one of their own headline an event directly connected to the UFC, the largest mixed martial arts organization in the world.
The loss is part of the story, but it should not erase the significance of reaching that stage.
A Setback, Not the End
Combat sports careers are not defined by a single result.
Brito’s journey offers a relevant example. He lost his first Contender Series appearance in 2023, returned to competition, rebuilt his momentum, captured another championship and eventually earned a second opportunity before Dana White.
Namo Fazil now faces a similar challenge.
His defeat against Brito may delay his immediate UFC ambitions, but it does not erase his seven-fight winning streak, international experience or reputation as a dangerous and versatile welterweight.
The next stage of Fazil’s career will depend on how he responds. With the right adjustments and another strong run of performances, he can place himself back into the UFC conversation.
Namo Fazil left Las Vegas without the victory he wanted. However, he also left having headlined the biggest event of his career, competed against a proven champion and carried the Kurdish name onto an international stage.
The night brought a painful loss—but it also marked an undeniable milestone.
